Texas teacher of the year

Chris Mihealsick, a science teacher at Round Rock Independent School District’s Westwood High School, was named the 2025 Texas Teacher of the Year.

Selected from among Texas’ 384,000 educators, Mihealsick represents Texas in the National Teacher of the Year program. She joins an elite group recognized at a ceremony held on October 25.

The celebration honored Mihealsick’s achievements alongside those of 40 other regional Teachers of the Year. This event highlights the dedication and excellence of educators across Texas.

Accepting the award, Mihealsick expressed gratitude for her peers’ support and reflected on teachers’ significant role in shaping Texas students’ future. “We teach everyone who comes through our doors to the very best of our ability, and we see firsthand the energy and potential that the kids of Texas have,” she shared. “I’m so incredibly humbled and grateful for this.”

Mihealsick’s Path to Teacher of the Year

Mihealsick’s journey to this recognition began with her selection as Region 13’s Teacher of the Year in July. This follows her earlier honor as Round Rock ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year in May. Her dedication profoundly impacts her students and community, making her a celebrated figure within Westwood High School for the past 17 years. Erin Campbell, Principal at Westwood High School, described Mihealsick as “a fierce advocate for kids, educators, and public education. Her impact is immense, and she makes a difference in many lives. It is an honor to have her leadership at Westwood High School.”

A 23-year veteran of the teaching profession, Mihealsick credits her students with inspiring her to bring her best to the classroom each day. “Their energy, their curiosity, their enthusiasm, and their teenage passion for life is what keeps me going day after day, trying to support their dreams,” she shared.

Mihealsick will join other state teachers in Washington, DC, for the National Teacher of the Year announcement. The ceremony is hosted by the President in the Rose Garden. If selected, Mihealsick will embark on a yearlong journey as an ambassador for educators nationwide.

Mihealsick Pledges to Represent all Texas Educators

Acknowledging the dedication of her fellow teachers, Mihealsick pledged to represent Texas’ public educators with integrity. “Education is not often an easy job, but everybody in this room has a deep and abiding passion for kids. I will do my very, very best to represent the very, very best of you in public education,” she concluded.

Mihealsick’s recognition as Texas Teacher of the Year underscores her invaluable contribution to the state’s educational community, her role as a beacon of excellence, and her advocacy for public education.
