See the Difference: TELI Advanced Leadership Training

Thompson Executive Leadership Institute

The Thompson Executive Leadership Institute (TELI) is a nationally recognized program designed to advance leadership training for both superintendents and principals. The academies are led by Dr. Bob Thompson and facilitated by the Education Service Center Region 13 (ESC Region 13). The first graduating cohort for superintendents was in 1994. The first graduating cohort for principals was in 1998. TELI has been instrumental in advancing leadership practices focused on instructional effectiveness, strategic decision-making, and community leadership for over 1300 graduates.

About TELI

TELI serves Texas superintendents as well as those from surrounding states, including New Mexico, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Alabama. Each academy brings school leaders together to explore ideas, build professional networks, and engage with expert facilitators and peers. Academies contain seven different learning sessions, including a field trip or retreat and a conference, depending on the specific academy.

“TELI is a fantastic experience, and I strongly encourage anyone with the opportunity to attend to make it happen. The program offers valuable insights for both personal and professional growth as a Superintendent. Every minute and expense invested in attending the Thompson Executive Leadership Institute is well worth it. I encourage Superintendents to be fully present—body, mind, and spirit—to get the most out of the experience. When Dr. Thompson and Dr. Smith speak, listen closely, as their wisdom is invaluable and should not be missed.”

“Attending the Thompson Executive Leadership Institute’s Superintendent Academy Cohort XXXII was a transformative experience that provided world-class training on essential topics for superintendents. The program offered valuable insights, strategies, and ample opportunities to network with peers, building lasting relationships that continue to offer support and inspiration. Over the course of the year, I made deep connections with fellow superintendents, explored innovative solutions to challenges, and gained new perspectives that have enhanced my leadership. I highly recommend this academy to any superintendent-nominee, as the knowledge, mentorship, and collaboration it offers are unparalleled. This experience has strengthened my ability to serve my district effectively and has contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth.”

Megan Pape, Superintendent, Snook ISD

Admission to the TELI Academies

Admission to the academies is competitive, with class sizes of about 25 participants. The Principal Academy accepts single or multiple principals from a district. Alumni often share that having a partner in the program enhances their experience.

Both academies offer multiple resources for participants to use as they learn and progress through the program. TELI is dedicated to enhancing leadership development at all levels of education, both public and private. The resources are designed to inform, invigorate, and challenge participants’ thinking. They also connect participants with fellow education leaders facing similar challenges.

“Receiving my acceptance letter to TELI was one of the most rewarding moments of my life, as I had heard so much about the program’s impact. My first session was filled with uncertainty, wondering how I could contribute or whether I would feel fulfilled by the experience. However, under the guidance of Dr. Thompson and Dr. Smith, the journey turned out to be a success, with their calculated and intentional approach to our learning. As I engaged with my cohort members and tackled real challenges, I grew both professionally and personally, feeling validated and valued throughout. This experience profoundly impacted my growth as an educational leader and as an individual, leaving me forever grateful.”

Earl Gilmore, Principal, Terrell High School

Resources include articles, books, and videos. Upon graduation from either academy, participants have continued access to resources to further their lifelong learning. Peer networks, strategies for structured growth activities, and an open and challenging “think tank” atmosphere for discussions are available to TELI alumni.

“Attending the Thompson Executive Leadership Institute and Principal Academy was a transformational experience. Connecting with principals from across Texas provided diverse insights into shared challenges in public education. Focusing on personal leadership growth brought unexpected value, boosting my confidence and sense of empowerment. Building a lasting network of trusted colleagues and friends was especially impactful. I’m honored to be part of the incredible Cohort XXVII and grateful for the lifelong connections formed.”

Stephanie Romero, Principal, Hall Elementary School
