STAAR EOC Retesters and A–F Accountability

STAAR EOC Retesters

In the Texas Academic Accountability System, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) End-or Course (EOC) re-tests factor into student achievement, alternative education accountability growth evaluations, and distinction designations in specific ways.

What General Criteria is Included in A–F Accountability

General criteria for EOC retests included in A–F Accountability are:

  • Best Result: For students taking EOC retests across the current accountability cycle (Summer, Fall, and Spring test administrations), the system selects the best result for performance calculations. If all retest results show the same level of performance, the most recent result is used.
  • Accountability Subset: The student must meet the accountability subset rule for their EOC retest result to be included in the campus’s accountability calculations. This means the student was in the campus’s fall snapshot and took the retest at that campus. If using “Best Result” (see above), the student must meet the accountability subset rule during the administration when the student had their “Best Result.”

  • Passing Standard: Retesters are evaluated based on the passing standard in place when they were first eligible to take any EOC assessment.

How are STAAR EOC and Domain 1: Student Achievement Connected?

STAAR EOC retest scores are included in Domain 1: Student Achievement following the above criteria for best result, accountability subset, and passing standard.

Domain 2, AEA and STAAR EOC

  • Domain 2, Part A: Academic Growth–Retest scores are excluded from Domain 2, Part A. Growth is calcluated exclusively using first-time testers.
  • Alternative Education Accountability (AEA) Part B: Retest Growth–Campuses registered under Alternative Education Accountability (AEA) are evaluated on School Progress, Part B: Retest Growth in place of Part B: Relative Performance.
    • Retest Growth is calculated for all students as one group. It is used for the AEA campus if there are at least 10 STAAR EOC retest assessments total for the campus. Small number analysis is not used.
    • Retest Growth is the percentage of STAAR EOC retests that are at the Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, or Masters Grade Level standards during an accountability cycle.
    • One point for each STAAR EOC assessment at Approaches Grade Level or above/(Total Number of STAAR EOC Retests)

Retest Growth calculations do not consider a student who takes the same assessment more than once within a single accountability cycle a retester.

For AEA campuses, Domain 2 is the better of Part A: Academic Growth or Part B: Retest Growth.

Campus Distinction Designations

Retest Growth is an indicator used to determine Academic Achievement Distinction Designations (AADDs) in Reading Language Arts (RLA), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The indicator measures the percentage of subject-area EOC retests that earn Approaches Grade Level or above during the current accountability cycle.
